Thank you for your enquiry regarding the transportation of your pets to Argentina with Animal Travel Services.

Transportation of your pets to Argentina is relatively straightforward. No quarantine imposed. You need an Import authorization given by the Servicio de Sanidad Animal depending from Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganaderia. In order to ensure that the state vets are available for inspection and to make custom clearance easier it is advised that your pets arrive during the week and preferably during working hours.

VACCINATIONS:

Vaccinations must be up to date.

RABIES inoculations: Valid not more than 12 months and not less than 30 days prior to pets departure.

CANINE/FELINE inoculations: Valid not more than 12 months and not less than 30 days prior to pets departure.

Puppies and Kittens up to 12 weeks old may travel on their mothers’ Rabies vaccination certificate.

Puppies and Kittens, 12 weeks and older must have their own Rabies vaccination done. They may only travel 30 days after the Rabies vaccination has been administered.

A Health Clearance Certificate is to be completed by your family vet, 7 days before your pets are due to travel. Health Certificates, validated by your family vet, is only valid for 10 days and must still be valid on the date of arrival in Argentina. The South African State Vet needs to certify these documents. The Argentian Consulate must endorse the documentation.

All pets must travel as manifested cargo and not as excess baggage.

Once they have arrived at their destination, it is required from you or a representative on your behalf, to ensure that the custom clearance is issued. Please note that you are responsible to settle any additional charges that may be incurred, due to customs/airline handling fees.

All original documentation including the vaccination cards will be attached to the air waybill (ticket) and copies there of attached to your pets travel containers. Please be sure to get the vaccination cards back from the airline on collection of your pets. We encourage that small blankets, toys or even t-shirts with your scent be included in the travel container as this will comfort and de-stress your pets during the flight.

Ganz wichtig!

ARGENTINA: IMPORT TAX for PET ANIMALS.

Considerations and legal ways to avoid its payment.

Import Tax for pets flying as CARGO: Pet animals being imported into Argentina, and flying as CARGO, are charged with an Import Tax of 50% on CIF value, which is calculated as follows: 50 % of the air freight charges + 50% of the animals´ value + 50% of the insurance cost.

Legal way to avoid paying this tax:

Argentinean family: the pets´ owner (consignee) must prove that he has been residing outside Argentina for more than 12 months and that he is now returning to Argentina. In addition to that, pets must arrive in Argentina not later than 6 months after the arrival of their owner. After that period, the animals will be taxable. Both facts must be demonstrated to Customs authorities by exhibiting the owner´s original

passport at the moment of importation of the animals.

Foreign family: if the pets´ owner is foreigner and is relocating for permanent residence or temporarily for working purposes, Customs will not charge this tax, provided that the animals arrive in Argentina not later than 6 months after the arrival of their owner. After that period, the animals will be taxable. Owner´s citizenship and his date of entry to Argentina must be demonstrated to Customs authorities by exhibiting an original passport at the moment of importation of the animals. Also, either a permanent residence or work visa are required; in the latter case, a copy of the work contract is also required.

Import tax for pets flying as Accompanied Baggage:

When the animals are flying with their owners on the same flight, and checked as accompanied baggage, an import tax is also applicable. In this case, there is neither an airway bill (AWB) nor a CIF value. So, the tax will be calculated directly over the animals´ market value, which will be much lower than the CIF value. The market value will be determined by the Customs officer on duty at arrival point. Rate is also

50%. Legal way to avoid paying this tax: same as explained above for the Cargo shipments.
